How to Set Up a Home Office That Looks Good on Zoom

When you work remotely, one wall of your home is your storefront: the one behind you on camera. That turns out to be good news, because a Zoom-ready workspace is a small project. You're designing about six feet of background and the light that hits your face, not a whole office.

Light comes first

Face the window instead of sitting in front of it. A window behind you turns you into a silhouette; a window in front of you is free, flattering studio light. If there's no window where you need one, a small lamp or panel light tucked just behind your screen does the same job after dark. Choose a soft white bulb rather than a stark blue-white one, unless you enjoy looking like you're delivering bad news.

Then build the background

Sit a few feet off the wall if the room allows it. Cameras flatten everything, and a little distance between you and what's behind you reads as a real space instead of a backdrop. Fill the upper half of the frame with one intentional anchor: a shelf, a bookcase, or a large piece of art. Bare wall reads unfinished on camera. Add something living, too. A tall plant just over your shoulder warms up every call, which is why you see it in every advice column, including this one.

Then edit ruthlessly. Open your meeting app, study your own preview, and remove anything you wouldn't want a client examining: laundry, cables, the bathroom door. You're styling the frame, not the whole room.

Comfort is part of the design

You'll sit here for hours, so the invisible parts matter as much as the visible ones. Screen at eye level, a chair that supports you, feet flat on the floor. A laptop riser and a separate keyboard cost less than a nice dinner and fix the hunch that a stylish-but-wrong chair creates.

If you rent, notice that nothing above needs a drill: a leaning shelf instead of a mounted one, adhesive hooks for the cables, a plant instead of a paint color. Your deposit never enters the conversation.
